Part I - Search Has Changed · Chapter 03

What Actually Influences AI Visibility?

There is unlikely to be one AEO ranking factor. Visibility emerges from the interaction of accessibility, clarity, evidence, authority and reputation.

The search industry naturally looks for ranking factors. It wants to know whether schema, links, mentions, reviews or content length has the greatest influence. That desire for a simple answer is understandable, but it may be misleading.

Different answer systems use different models, indexes, retrieval processes and interfaces. Even within one platform, source selection can change by prompt type. Product specifications, reputation questions and local recommendations may draw on very different evidence.

The Myth of the Single Lever

No single tactic is likely to guarantee visibility across every answer environment. Structured data can improve clarity without creating authority. Digital PR can create authority while leaving product information unclear. Reviews can strengthen reputation while technical barriers prevent retrieval.

AEO should therefore be treated as a system. The weakest important component can limit the whole result.

Technical Accessibility

Systems need to access the information. Crawlability, rendering, indexation, canonicalisation, internal linking and page architecture remain fundamental. Technical strength does not guarantee recommendation, but technical weakness can prevent other signals from being used.

Clarity and Entity Consistency

The organisation needs to be described consistently across its website and relevant external profiles. Product names, service definitions, expert roles and company relationships should not contradict one another.

Clarity reduces the risk that a model confuses the client with another entity or associates it with the wrong category.

Original Content and Evidence

Generic explanations are increasingly easy to generate. Original research, verified customer outcomes, expert experience, methodologies and proprietary data provide stronger reasons for systems and publishers to use a source.

Evidence also helps the organisation move from self-description to proof.

Authority and Citations

Independent sources can validate the organisation’s claims. Relevant editorial coverage, industry associations, partner directories, expert commentary and customer stories create a broader evidence network.

The quality and relevance of the source matter more than mention volume alone.

Reviews, Communities and Social Proof

Reviews and communities reveal lived experience. Reddit discussions, professional forums, LinkedIn posts, YouTube reviews and specialist platforms can influence how a product or provider is perceived.

These sources should not be manipulated. Their value comes from authentic, independent experience.

Optimising for Trust, Not Platforms

Platform-specific observations can guide tactics, but the more durable strategy is to build information that deserves to be trusted wherever it is retrieved. Clear facts, strong evidence, independent validation and genuine customer satisfaction travel across platforms.

Key takeaways

  • AI visibility is produced by a system of signals rather than one universal ranking factor.
  • Technical accessibility is necessary but cannot replace evidence and external validation.
  • Entity consistency reduces ambiguity across owned and third-party sources.
  • Original evidence gives publishers and answer systems a reason to reference the organisation.
  • The most durable strategy is to optimise for trust rather than one platform.
