Technical SEO in an AI World

Technical SEO is not less important in AI search. It becomes the infrastructure through which evidence can be retrieved and understood.

The rise of answer engines has led some people to imply that technical SEO matters less. I believe the opposite is closer to the truth. If an organisation wants its information to be used across search and AI interfaces, that information still needs to be accessible, stable and interpretable.

Technical SEO does not create trust by itself, but weak infrastructure can prevent trustworthy information from being discovered.

Crawlability and Indexation

Priority pages should be accessible without unnecessary barriers. Robots rules, status codes, canonical signals, redirects and indexation controls need to reflect the intended information architecture.

The agency should focus on whether important entities and evidence can be retrieved, not simply on total indexed page counts.

Rendering and JavaScript

Important information may be loaded through client-side scripts, interactions or third-party widgets. Agencies should compare raw and rendered HTML and assess whether critical specifications, reviews and evidence are reliably available.

A visually impressive interface can still create weak machine access.

Internal linking communicates relationships. Service pages should connect to relevant case studies, experts, research and supporting guidance. Product pages should connect to specifications, comparisons and customer proof.

Architecture should make strategic relationships obvious to both users and machines.

Structured Data

Structured data can clarify organisations, people, products, articles, reviews and relationships. It should reflect visible, accurate content and should not be treated as a place to make unsupported claims.

Performance and User Experience

Speed, stability and accessibility affect how people use the site and whether important journeys function. They may also affect retrieval and rendering efficiency.

Technical performance should be prioritised around commercial and evidence pages rather than reduced to one generic score.

CMS Governance

Many technical problems return because templates, publishing workflows and ownership remain weak. Agencies should help clients build rules for page creation, structured fields, redirects, internationalisation and content retirement.

AEO maturity depends on maintaining information quality, not merely fixing it once.

Technical Debt as Reputation Debt

Broken migrations, duplicate profiles, outdated templates and inaccessible evidence make the business harder to understand. Over time, technical debt becomes reputation debt because the public record becomes fragmented.

Technical teams should therefore be treated as partners in reputation infrastructure.
