Prompt tracking

There is no stable rank one.

In this piece

Prompt tracking shows whether you appear in AI answers for the questions you care about. It is useful, but easy to over-read.

Set it up

  1. Use the prompt set from chapter 4, grouped by topic.
  2. Run each prompt several times per platform at a regular interval.
  3. Record whether you are mentioned, cited, recommended, and how you are described.
  4. Record competitors and cited sources too.

Report share, not position

AI answers vary between runs, users and locations. There is no stable "rank one". Report the share of runs in which you appear, by topic, over time.

Track accuracy

Note when an answer gets facts about you wrong. Accuracy is a metric in its own right, and often the quickest to improve.

Know the limits

  • Tracked prompts are a sample, not the whole market.
  • Personalisation and memory mean real users may see different answers.
  • Tools differ in method. Pick one and stay consistent.

Key takeaways

  • Run prompts repeatedly.
  • Report share, not position.
  • Track accuracy as its own metric.
